5 Tool Academy pitching instructors, Lou Solarte, MJ Richards, Steve Larson have been trained and certified by Dr. Tom House, widely regarded as "The Father of Modern Day Pitching Mechanics" founder of the National Pitching Association (NPA) and the Rod Dedeaux Baseball Research Institute (RDRBI)
The Rod Dedeaux Baseball Research Institute (RDRBI), housed at the USC campus, takes advantage of over 40 years of research by Dr. Tom House and the National Pitching Association (NPA) to establish itself as the leader in the field of baseball research. While the NPA is focused primarily on pitchers, the underlying curriculum in the areas of conditioning, nutrition, and the mental/emotional side of the game will be the foundation on which the hitting and fielding curriculums will be founded at RDRBI.
The RDRBI brings together leaders from the medical science community and the sports training community. Through their joint efforts, the RDRBI helps athletes achieve greater core strength, less risk of injury, and overall higher performance. The RDRBI is dedicated to reducing injury through extensive research of conditioning, mechanics and performance.
As we progress through the new millennia, we are experiencing the effects of scientific research and development in many sports that we participate in or enjoy as spectators. Golf, football, track, cycling, snow skiing, and many more have benefited from advancements in research and technology for athletes and their equipment. The lone straggler in this arena is baseball.
Baseball continues to rely on conventional wisdom that has prevailed throughout its 100+ year history. From the pros to youth leagues, baseball is still reliant upon wisdom that has been handed down from generation to generation instead of taking advantage of the opportunity of advances in technology, nutrition, and conditioning. As a result, baseball is experiencing injury rates at an all time high throughout all levels of play.
Three-dimensional motion analysis of hitting, pitching and throwing mechanics will enable RDRBI to continue research originated at the NPA to identify high risk areas of injury, as well as improve body mechanics efficiency for optimum performance. The NPA is the vehicle by which the findings at RDRBI are disseminated to the baseball community.
Baseball has become a year-round sport. The advent of travel teams, fall ball, and the regular season has enabled America to enjoy its national pastime all year. Unfortunately the year-round ?season? has also brought with it an increase in the number of injuries related to the game. Over use combined with decreasing rest times have caused an alarming increase in the number of injuries in baseball athletes of all ages. The RDRBI is entirely focused on researching ways of preventing these injuries that are keeping athletes from reaching their fullest potential.
Combining the intellectual property and the premium brand of the NPA with existing USC sports medicine, athletics, exercise physiology, and pharmaceutical departments has allowed us to discover protocols that will reduce injury, promote athletic performance, and aid the athlete in reaching their goals.

PITCHING
5 Tool Academy pitching instructors, Lou Solarte, MJ Richards and Steve Larson have been trained and certified by Dr. Tom House, widely regarded as “The Father of Modern Day Pitching Mechanics”. of the National Pitching Association (NPA). The National Pitching Association was formed by leading coaches, athletes, and management teams to help pitchers of all ages safely develop to their fullest potential. In today's non-professional baseball programs, (Little League, High School, College, etc.), too many pitchers get injured thus limiting their opportunity to continue playing baseball. Many times the desire to win has superseded what is best for a young athlete's development and future potential. This combined with general misinformation about what is good, better, or best for the development of young pitchers has seriously impaired or injured pitchers beyond rehabilitation.
For the most part, arm injuries are largely preventable if;
• pitch totals are managed properly
• the player utilizes correct throwing mechanics
• has the necessary core strength base established
The 5 Tool Academy will not only introduce the essentials of proper arm care and show participants how to effectively improve each player’s game performance by throwing consistent strikes with all three pitches safely!
We focus on teaching:
• the mechanics of pitching
• strength and conditioning requirements
• nutritional necessities
• mental and emotional elements of the sport.
We aspire to provide our athletes with the essential tools of becoming more successful in order to attain their peak athletic ability.
We take enormous pride in our work and in return expect firm commitments from our students. Whether the athlete is eight or eighteen years of age, we treat every athlete with the same respect regardless of their abilities and talents. In order to become successful and benefit from our program, it will take a firm commitment, positive attitude, and a consistent
